Researching bat houses since 1990, BCM has designed a low cost, long lasting bat roost with updated features perfect for any backyard! Our one-piece, UV-resistant resin outer shell will outlast any unmaintained all-wood bat house on the market; no painting required.
Each ColonyCabin ships finished, with all interior surfaces permanently roughened by hand for the best "bat-holds" possible. We do not use screen material for baffles, which can shred over time and may trap bat pups. Our decorative bat design on the front serves as a vent in addition to three vents on the rear. Besides providing a desirable temperature gradient from a very hot roof to ambient, bats can exit the back onto a Perch Panel included in the mount kit, or pass into other ColonyCabins or the BCM bat houses on the same post.
Which color bat house is best for you? Select black, brown, or green for most northern states and high elevations. Select tan for warmer climates such as all the Gulf Coast states and low elevation/desert of AZ, NM, and CA. Please refer to our online manuals which will assist you with site determination, installation, and long-term maintenance tips. Actual colors may differ slightly than what is depicted online.
Highly durable UV-resistant weatherproof body- no fasteners penetrate the shell!
Holds ~126 myotis or free tail bats! (calculated 2 bats per linear inch of roost space.)
Custom bat-shaped front vent and rear vents for air-transfer
Rear exit vent allows bats to cool off on a Perch Panel, included with all Mount Kits.
Available in 4 colors (Black, Tan, Dark Green, and Dark Brown)
Seamless exterior recycled resin shell, significantly outlasts any wooden bat house
Suitable for at least 14 North American bat species
Special interior Attic Ledges favored by pups
Self-cleaning; all droppings fall out naturally
Dimensions: 25" x 19" x 3.75" (~16 lbs)
3 Chambers (both 0.75" and 1.00'' spacing for nationwide use), mount kit creates a 4th chamber on sunny days.
What included?
Assembled ColonyCabin bat house; no paint required.
ColonyCabin Mount, can be attached to a wood post, building siding, or brick; appropriate hardware included.
Lag bolts and watertight roofing screws for attaching the ColonyCabin to the ColonyCabin Mount.
What's needed?
Cordless drill or wrench with 9/16'' & 1/4'' socket
We have Mount Kits available for attaching this bat house to a post, siding, or brick/stone which will add another chamber of roost space. A readily available wood post is a pressure-treated 4" x 4" x 16' or 4" x 6" x 16' which is cemented 2.5'+ into the ground. You can fasten two 2''x6''x16' boards together to create a warp-resistant 4x6x16'. Mount on the 4'' side. Use a post protector/saver to double the life of the post if in wet areas.

An immersive journey into a natural wonder--the underwater caves and cenotes of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, a destination very few divers have ever reached.
Shining a light into the "Underworld" (Xibalba, as the Maya called this sacred place), these stunning images from cave diver and award-winning photographer Martin Broen transport us into a secret and fascinating world accessed from cenotes, water-filled gateways to an infinite labyrinth of tunnels that create the longest underwater cave systems on the planet.
Over multiple expeditions and utilizing groundbreaking diving and photographic techniques, Broen has captured more than 250 different cenotes, their caves, and the dramatic secrets that lie within them, bringing photographs from his explorations back to the surface. Paired with images of startling otherworldly beauty, Broen's engaging text guides readers through the unique features of the Yucatan cenotes: from dramatic sinkhole entrances to decorated underwater caverns filled with rainbow colors; from ancient time capsules that document the fossil record to the critical environmental role that cenotes play today.
With contributions from Alex Mustard and Paul Nicklen based on their own diving experiences, this volume beckons divers, cavers and armchair explorers into a uniquely dangerous yet beautiful and essential underwater world.
When small-town farmer and spelunking enthusiast Floyd Collins became trapped in a southern Kentucky cave in early 1925, the sensationalism and hysteria of the rescue attempt generated America's first true media spectacle, making Collins's story one of the most prominent of the century. The crowds that gathered outside Sand Cave turned the rescue site into a carnival. Collins's plight was front-page news throughout the country, hourly bulletins interrupted radio programs, and Congress recessed to hear the latest word.
With a new foreword by Tina Landau, bookwriter and director of the musical Floyd Collins, as well as a new afterword by Roger W. Brucker, Trapped! is a tense adventure and a brilliant historical re-creation of the past--a tale as enthralling today as it was when the event took place over one hundred years ago.

Following a number of avoidable caving incidents, the NSS Vertical Training Commission ("VTC") was chartered, in 2021. VTC's curriculum is designed to help interested individuals obtain the appropriate and sufficient competencies, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills needed to be safe while vertical caving with single-rope techniques. These materials are used in conjuction with a training program that provides hands-on experience while being accessible, attainable, and understandable to a diverse range of cavers.
VTC is based on a train-the-trainers model. Students who master the curriculum may later attend a trainer course, designed to prepare competent and active cavers to safely teach others at the grotto level.
This is the first edition of the student materials for the Level 1 Curriculum, "Basic Vertical Techniques."

2024. From Karst Waters Institute. By William B White, Daniel H Doctor and Srah K Carmichael. 38 pp.
INTRODUCING THE ULTIMATE FIELD GUIDE TO SPELEOTHEMS from the scientists of Karst Waters Institute.
Almost anyone who ever took a cave tour learned the difference between stalactites and stalagmites, but can you tell anthodites from helictites? Moon milk from pool fingers? Bacon from boxwork? Just as illustrated guides help visitors identify flora and fauna of the surface world, Speleothems: A guide to speleothem form and identification provides cave visitors with descriptions and images of over thirty types of natural mineral deposits found in caves. Written by the cave scientists William B. White, Daniel H. Doctor, and Sarah K. Carmichael, this new publication of Karst Waters Institute describes not only the appearance and names of various speleothems, but the chemical (and sometimes biological) processes that create them. It is perfect for your next cave visit. While commonly called "formations" on cave tours, the term "speleothem" was invented in 1952 to distinguish cave deposits from geological strata which are also called "formations." Readers will learn to classify a wide variety of speleothems by appearance, method of formation, and common geographic locations. Speleothems also provides sources for additional information as well as instruction on how to protect and preserve these rare and delicate cave features. Budding geologists and curious visitors alike will gain deeper understanding of the magnificent world below in this beautifully illustrated and informative handbook.

A tender and true poetry collection about a man’s life, family, and surroundings. A lifelong caver, John's book includes two caving related poems.
Cole’s autobiographical poetry collection captures the author’s life from childhood to old age.
In this book of poems written between 1985 and 2023, Cole revisits his childhood, youth, adulthood, and senior years. The poet’s journey is divided into seven non-chronological sections. In his youth, Cole recalls carefree “days of play in woods & fields” (“mrs. ramsey”) in his home state of Kentucky. He writes of his father, an abusive and alcoholic “highly imperfect patriarch” who taught Cole that “that you can destroy your life / all on your own / and die bitter and sad and abandoned” (“what my father taught me”). Relatives are at the center of “ghost story,” in which Cole evokes a grandmother, “cumbrous, phlegmatic, laconic / uneasy amazon in her faded cotton dress.” The author gingerly recounts holding his longtime partner after death: “I lifted you / light as corn silk / and carried you / to the body bag” (“reunion”).The “La Pasada” section features 11 Spanish-infused poems set in Mexico, where “riotous birdsong awakens me / just before dawn watercolors / the palm-fringed horizon” (“birds of tlacotalpan”).The final, titular poem mourns the fleeting nature of all things: “there’s your Forever / for as long as you live / and then it too / is gone.” Cole’s blank verse style makes for an easy, breezy read that novice and seasoned poetry readers alike will enjoy. Characters are fully formed and come alive in his descriptions; there’s Mrs. Ramsey, “a hobbled crone in her ragged shawl / bent upon her walking stick,”and the author’s former roommate, Jenny, “beautiful, but haunted / violent, volant / as only dandelions / in their stubborn generosity / diligently dare” (“Jenny”). At over 250 pages, the collection could have used some pruning; some readers may also have preferred a chronological ordering of the poems.

Nancy Pistole (Editor). 82 pp., many cave descriptions, cave surveys and maps; Berlin 2024. This volume summarizes the 2014-2023 expeditions of Philippine and US cavers to the Kulaman Plateau in Sultan Kudarat Povince, SW Mindanao). Thirty km of passages in 150 caves were documented, 56 cave maps were finished so far and are included in this volume.
The purpose of the book is to present karst phenomena as natural sights in a popular way, and at the same time, emphasize their importance to people and their extreme vulnerability. Through numerous photographs and schematic models, the book tries to explain scientific findings about karst processes, formation of different surface forms and cave types, as also the problems which people arise to the karst environment with their way of life. The photographs of sixty-two authors represent different types of karst and caves from almost all over the world. Karst functions the same way all over the world. People have negatively affected the environment for thousands of years, but the sheer size of today's human population leads to more conspicuous and inevitable negative environmental consequences. Pollution affects not only water quality but also caves and their fragile ecosystems. The basis for all karst protection activities is knowledge and understanding. Karst and caves are part of our environment. Even if we do not live in the karst or ever visit a cave, all people on Earth benefit from the water they provide, from their ecosystems, and from their economic values linked to tourism. The book was published with the help of the Slovenian National Commission for UNESCO.Author: Nadja Zupan Hajna Year: 2021,hardback• 28 × 21 cm• 172 pages• illustrated. In English.
World-famous since the mid-1800s, Howe’s Cave had been modernized for visitors in 1927-29 with an elevator entrance, clean paths, and electric lights. A grand reopening on Decoration Day, 1929 made Howe Caverns, Inc. one of upstate New York’s most popular tourist destinations.
Less than a year later, two of the new corporation’s employees died in the cave under baffling circumstances in the early morning hours of April 24, 1930. They collapsed near the postcard-worthy formation the Bell of Moscow.
At 5 a.m. that same morning, 7½ tons of dynamite knocked 60,000 tons of limestone from the hillside at the old cement quarry, just southeast of the cave. Had fumes from the blast found their way through the maze of caverns’ passages and killed the men more than a half-mile away? Or had it loosened dangerous gases lurking in the cave for eons?
This is the untold story of that tragedy: the rescue attempts, the investigation and coroner’s report, and finally, the legal recourse sought by the widows of the two men. Much of the story is told in vivid, first-hand accounts taken from court records of one of the cases. The testimony—by rescuers, cave experts, quarrymen, explosives engineers, doctors, and chemists under the dueling questioning of the widow’s attorney and his adversary —unravels the mystery of who was responsible and illuminates unfamiliar avenues of the dark, remarkable cave. How will the jury decide?
The Cave Electrician’s Widow:The Tragedy at Howe Caverns & Courtroom Battle for Justiceis part David vs. Goliath; part mystery, part courtroom drama, part travelogue through the fascinating underground realm of the caverns, and much more.
Includes more than 20 photos and maps to recreate for readers the entire tableau of the 1930 tragedy – both above and below ground.

Lechuguilla Cave ( New Mexico, USA) is one of the most beautiful caves on Earth. Since its discovery in 1986, more than 240 kilometers of cave has been explored – with no end in sight. Owing to its geologic setting and unusual process of formation, the cave contains a remarkable diversity of rare minerals and formations, which have helped change our understanding of how caves form and the microbial life they can contain.
In this book, the most active explorers of the cave show the features that made it famous and reveal new discoveries in terms of beauty, scale, and science. Through their writing and photography, they take the reader on their journey of preparing for, and exploring, this remarkable cave. They describe how to successfully live and work in the underground, and highlight the challenges that must be overcome to discover and map new passages. An explanation of how the stunning imagery is captured takes the reader along in this visual journey of Discoveries in a Hidden Splendor. Finally, the extraordinary lengths undertaken to conserve Lechuguilla are illustrated, and how such efforts go hand-in-hand with exploration and photography to reveal the intriguing nature of this wonder of the underground.

Paul Saxon, a geology professor, is warned of a pending apocalypse -- political divisiveness is creating social collapse. Who will die and how will they die? Paul sees it as the Quick Death in the immediate panic, then the Big Death as supplies run out, then the Slow Death as the survivors struggle to see the next day. Paul purchases a cave property in western Alabama, outfitting the cave to be a secret, hidden refuge. Away on business in Atlanta, riots break out and Paul flees to northwestern Georgia. The rest of his family barely makes it to the safety of the Alabama cave as the President declares martial law and the southern states close their borders. Paul stumbles onto a refuge that has taken a different approach. He becomes the Discriminator, deciding who is let in and who is sent away. Hundreds of miles distant, his family is discovered and must flee. Where can safety be found, how can they get there, and will anyone help them? pb, 234 pp.
John Mylroie is Professor Emeritus of Geology at Mississippi State University. After childhood in rural upstate New York, he attended Syracuse University, graduating in 1971 with a Zoology degree Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and also lettering on the soccer team. He met Joan Saxon, a fellow Zoology major and Phi Beta Kappa, in Chemistry lecture his freshman year; they were married in 1970. Draft number 69 in the first draft lottery sent John to the Navy for a year as a sonar technician. While subsequently working in the electronics laboratory of the Biology Department at SUNY Albany, John decided to turn his sporting interest in caves into a career. He entered the Geology PhD program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1974, graduating in 1977 and taking a faculty position at Murray State University where Joan earned a MSc in microbiology and taught as an instructor.John and Joan decided to start a family in 1981, and by November 1983 had three sons, the latter two appearing as undiagnosed identical twins (surprise!). With five mouths to feed, John took the Department Head position in the Geology and Geography Department (now Geosciences) at Mississippi State University in 1985. Joan later became a Geography instructor. He continued his island cave research program, often taking the entire family into the field. The National Speleological Society awarded John their Science Award for his work on island caves in 2000, and the Honorary Member award, the society's highest award, for lifetime contributions to cave science in 2008. Joan and John have completed field work in 25 countries, and they have published hundreds of professional papers, reports, field guides, and articles. Their work on islands across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, has given them insight into how peoples and cultures interact with the environment in remote settings. After a career of writing factual material in scientific literature, John decided it was time to make things up and write fiction. He has written books in the science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and spy thriller genres.

240 PP. Hard bound. A true-life scientific adventure story, this thrilling book takes the reader deep into South African caves to discover fossil remains that compel a monumental reframing of the human family tree.
In the summer of 2022, Lee Berger lost 50 pounds in order to wriggle though impossibly small openings in the Rising Star cave complex in South Africa--spaces where his team has been unearthing the remains of Homo naledi, a proto-human likely to have coexisted with Homo sapiens some 250,000 years ago.
The lead researcher on the site, still Berger had never made his way into the dark, cramped, dangerous underground spaces where many of the naledi fossils had been found. Now he was ready to do so. Once inside the cave, Berger made shocking new discoveries that expand our understanding of this early hominid--discoveries that stand to alter our fundamental understanding of what makes us human. So what does it all mean?
Join Berger on the adventure of a lifetime as he explores the Rising Star cave system and begins the complicated process of explaining these extraordinary finds--finds that force a rethinking of human evolution, and discoveries that Berger calls "the Rosetta stone of the human mind."
